Is there too much of a good thing in the world of random access memory?
Exceeding the maximum memory supported by a computer’s motherboard and operating system simply means that RAM sticks containing excess memory will be ignored. For example, if your motherboard supports 64GB of RAM and you splash the cash and install 128GB, instead of failing to boot, the computer loads and operates with 64GB of RAM only.
So with that said, you absolutely can have too much RAM, but fortunately the only negative will be that your bank balance will be unnecessarily poorer.

What is the maximum amount of RAM for a PC?
The maximum amount of RAM supported by your computer depends on the processor, motherboard, and operating system (OS). On the low end of the scale, a 32-bit processor can support up to 4GB of RAM only with the maximum possible RAM being 2TB for Windows 11 Pro, and 18 Exabytes for Mac OS X.
Most computers released in the past decade use 64-bit processors which can theoretically support 18 exabytes (1 exabyte is equal to about one billion gigabytes!), however most motherboards and operating systems limit RAM to a maximum of 128GB.
Windows 11 Home Edition has a limit of 128GB of RAM. Mac OS X 10.9 also had a limit of 128GB, but the most recent update has increased this limit to 18 Exabytes. Windows 11 Pro on the other hand now allows up to 2TB of RAM.
Some older motherboards with 64-bit processors may only support 8GB, 16GB, or 64GB of RAM. In some cases, you can update the BIOS of the motherboard, which may increase the maximum memory supported, with updates available from the manufacturer of the motherboard or the computer.
If you install too much RAM, the computer should continue booting with the additional sticks of RAM in place, however the motherboard will not recognize it during the boot process.
The maximum amount of RAM is not divided equally between all memory slots. For example, a computer may support up to 128GB of RAM and include eight slots. Instead of filling eight slots with 16GB sticks of RAM, you could install four 32GB sticks of RAM.
How much RAM do you need for gaming?
Most modern games recommend 16GB of memory for optimal performance which can be made up from multiple RAM modules. Typically, 8GB of RAM is the absolute minimum needed to run games released within the past couple of years.
Graphics-intensive games also require dedicated graphics memory. For example, you may need 2GB – 4GB of VRAM to run some of the latest games in 1080p or 4K resolution.
If you do not plan on playing video games, you will still need at least 4GB of RAM for a PC. The minimum requirement for Windows 11 is 4GB of RAM whilst Mac OS 10.14 requires at least 8GB of RAM.

Does adding more RAM make a computer faster?
Installing more RAM may speed up a computer by keeping applications from fighting for resources. Random-access memory (RAM) stores data for active programs and when RAM usage reaches its maximum capacity, programs start to slow down.
If you notice that your computer runs slowly when multitasking or using memory intensive programs, you may benefit from adding more RAM. The extra RAM allows more programs to store data on the memory sticks, which should help prevent slowdowns.
While adding RAM can help prevent slowdowns due to excessive memory usage, other upgrades can have more of an impact on computer speed. Upgrading the graphics card, processor, or hard drive are all options to help boost performance.
For example, a graphics card processes graphics, which is necessary for many of the latest video games, 4K video playback, and video editing. Without a dedicated GPU, the resource-heavy programs can quickly use up RAM.
Upgrading to a faster hard drive can also improve performance. If you currently use a SATA hard drive, upgrading to an NVM express hard drive should increase the processing speed of your computer.
The processor has the greatest impact on computer speed. A faster processor can complete tasks quicker, allowing RAM to be used more efficiently.
How do I lower my RAM usage?
Lower RAM usage by closing applications that hog memory. You can open “task manager” in Windows or the “activity monitor” on Mac OS to view RAM usage. Find out which programs use the most RAM and close them or find lightweight alternatives.
For example, some antivirus programs are known to use up a large amount of RAM. Switching to a less resource-intensive antivirus program may free up RAM.
So can a computer have too much RAM?
